DEESIDE WILDLIFE
HERON
The heron is an almost daily visitor to the fishery. They are tolerated, as they never seem to catch a trout, which is probably too big to handle. They predate mainly on frogs in the spring, and sticklebacks all year, supplemented by damselflies and dragonflies in the summer. They do however target bank voles and field mice by stalking along the sedges lining the ponds, making them an occasional but worthwhile meal.
Whilst they will happily swallow a frog whole, with toads they toss them around to remove the skin, which is slightly toxic, and it would appear, distasteful, before swallowing.
