The common snipe is present in small numbers in UK all year, and many fly in from the continent to escape severe winters there. It is a bird of marshland, streams and wet fields, where it finds worms and other insects. Although it has a short sharp song it is best known for its strange mating flight. It plunges at a steep angle with the tail outspread. The outer tail feathers vibrate strongly in the wind, creating a resonant humming sound.
