Road Kill Badger

Yet another badger killed on the road.

As is often the case this one was lying tight to the side of the road, looking for all the world like it was resting.

An examination evidenced no outward damage, broken limbs or skull. Although shaped like a barrel, they are low slung, so it appears likely the car chassis crushed its ribcage as it passed over.

It died only 300 yards from its sett. What makes it particularly sad for me is it was the matriarchal sow from my home sett, a really large animal in prime condition.

The Scottish Badger Group have recorded 584 road kills up to Autumn this year. Those had been reported, how many are never reported. What carnage!

What this does show however is how strong the Scottish population is for an animal which is mostly seen by the wider public only as road kill.
